It’s common knowledge that sitting for long periods of time is bad for your health, but sometimes, I get involved in my work and I either forget to get up or simply don’t have the time to get moving. This is a shared issue amongst adults and children alike, as school and work require long periods of passive activity. In addition to being a teacher, I have a job as a virtual assistant which requires me to be stationary at a desk for long periods of time. The majority of the time that I work at my desk, I’m sitting. Now, with technology, there is a better way to spend your hours working than just sitting down.
The Stir Kinetic Desk and many other people who have in home office jobs. This innovative, high-end desk keeps track of user health analytics and prompts users to get up and move or stand up. The Stir Kinetic Desk features motion sensors, cloud-based structure and storage, and learning algorithms.
For the most part, this desk appears similar to any other office desk — however, when you take a closer look, you’ll see that the desk has a small touchpad on the surface. Through using the touchpad, you can program the desk with your preferred settings for regulating your activity. For example, you can set the desired amount of time spent sitting and standing each day. After you customize the desk, it will signal the user by giving the user a nudge when it’s time to get up and move. This desk is easily adjustable so that you can switch from sitting to standing within seconds.
While Stir Kinetic Desk will remind you to get up and move, you will have the option to accept or deny the reminder. The desk won’t continually nudge you until you’re standing up, so you will still have to use some self-control to really reap all of the benefits that standing has to offer. Eventually, the desk will begin to learn your preferred patterns and will adjust accordingly. The Stir Kinetic Desks use intelligent, learning algorithms to adjust to your habits and improve reminders. If you always prefer to sit after a large meal around dinner time, for example, the desk will take that into account when scheduling times for you to move. These user settings are stored into the cloud.
For as handy as this desk may be, at its current price of $2990 for the entry-level desk, Stir Kinetic Desk M1, and $4990 for Stir Kinetic Desk F1, it may be best to just stick to my regular office desk for now. However, there is still high potential for Stir Kinetic Desk to be a major game changer to the way people work in the future; desks like these will be more affordable and available to everyone.
